The poem was meant satirically, inspired by the theoretically welcoming attitude of my hometown's signs proclaiming itself to be a "Gateway City". We're in the middle of a multi-million dollar overhaul of downtown. This included our local transit hub, in which we stuck commuters on a big grey island with nothing but a Dunkin' Donuts to keep them company, in addition to attitudes which don't seem to have really changed much since the 1960s. The result is a welcome in signage only with residents, local politicians, architecture and even street design all seeming to insinuate we don't genuinely expect anyone to ever visit.
And once again, this is one of those poems that was inspired by one specific event and ended up being broader than I thought.
The poem's message should make one nervous. It's one I hope I never end up saying for realsies.
